Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has unveiled exciting updates on the much-anticipated Delhi-Varanasi bullet train project. This high-speed rail corridor is set to revolutionize travel between key cities, offering unprecedented speed and efficiency.
The proposed Varanasi bullet train corridor is poised to slash the travel time between Delhi and Lucknow to a mere two hours. This development marks a significant advancement in coecting major hubs and fostering seamless transportation across the region.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman first aounced this transformative project in the Union Budget 2026-27, highlighting the government's commitment to enhancing infrastructure and coectivity.
Currently, the construction of the country’s first high-speed rail corridor, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train network, is progressing rapidly. The upcoming Delhi-Lucknow bullet train project is set to further streamline travel between the two cities, reducing journey times to just two hours.
Compared to the existing Vande Bharat Express and Shatabdi Express services, which take over six hours to complete the route, the new bullet train network will offer unparalleled speed and efficiency for passengers.
Railway Minister Vaishnaw highlighted that the Varanasi-Patna and Varanasi-Lucknow regions will merge into a single economic zone due to the high-speed rail corridor. This integration is set to stimulate economic growth and facilitate smoother coectivity between key regions.
Minister Vaishnaw emphasized that upcoming bullet train corridors will drastically reduce travel times, making trains a preferred choice over airlines on various routes. With plans for new corridors from Mumbai to Pune, Pune to Hyderabad, and Hyderabad to Bengaluru, the era of bullet trains will revolutionize travel across the country.
He confidently stated, "So nobody will fly. These sectors will be out for airlines. I’m reminding right away for those who want to invest in airlines. These sectors will be 99 per cent dominated by railways."
The Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for seven high-speed rail corridors have been entrusted to the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) for swift implementation. The Railway Board has directed the NHSRCL to revise the DPRs to ensure seamless execution of these transformative projects.
The Standing Committee on Railways has stressed the importance of completing land acquisition and statutory clearances before sanctioning new projects. This proactive approach is vital for ensuring timely implementation and financial viability of these high-speed rail corridors.
