Residents of Purani Mandi, Old Jammu, were shocked on Wednesday night when a 63-year-old man made an attempt on the life of former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister, Dr. Farooq Abdullah. The accused, Kamal Singh Jamwal, hails from one of the oldest families in the area, as reported by locals.
In a video captured at the scene, Jamwal confessed to the police that he had harbored a desire to kill Farooq Abdullah for the past two decades. "Today I got a chance, but he escaped," he stated. When questioned about his motives, Jamwal cryptically replied, "Mera apna maksad hai (I have my motives)." The incident took place during a wedding function, where Jamwal fired at Abdullah from close range, narrowly missing him.
Reports indicate that Jamwal's family has resided in Purani Mandi even before the era of Jammu and Kashmir's first Dogra ruler, Maharaja Gulab Singh. He sustains himself through rents from ancestral properties. Despite not having a criminal record, sources mention that he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the attack.
Farooq Abdullah managed to escape unharmed, with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah labeling the incident as an "assassination attempt." Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's adviser, Nasir Aslam Wani, were also present at the wedding. Choudhary criticized the lack of local police presence at the event, calling it a significant security lapse.
Omar Abdullah expressed gratitude that his father narrowly avoided the attempt on his life. He highlighted the gravity of the situation, questioning how an armed individual could breach the security detail and come within shooting range of a Z+ NSG-protected former CM. The case raises numerous unanswered questions about the security protocols in place.
