Tragic Loss: Two Women Mid-day Meal Cooks Pass Away Amid Wage Hike Protest in Chhattisgarh
Rukmani Sinha, a woman in her 50s from Balod district, and Dulari Yadav, in her early 60s from Bemetara district, tragically passed away this week while participating in a protest for a wage hike in New Raipur, Chhattisgarh.
The ongoing agitation by the Chhattisgarh School Madhyanh Bhojan Rasoiya Sanyukta Sangh, demanding an increase in daily wages from Rs 66 to Rs 340, marked its 31st day with the heartbreaking loss of these two women.
Sinha, who returned home feeling unwell after the protest on January 24, was rushed to Balod hospital where she was referred to Rajnandgaon medical college. She succumbed to health complications on January 26 due to underlying health issues, including diabetes and cardiac arrest, as stated by Dr. Pawan Jethani, Deputy Superintendent of Atal Bihari Vajpayee Memorial Medical College.
Yadav, who had attended the protest on January 23, complained of breathing difficulties and was later admitted to Shri Shankaracharya Institute of Medical Sciences in Bhilai. Despite efforts to save her life, she passed away on January 27 due to pneumonia and delayed medical care.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Gaukaran Yadav, the grandson of Dulari Yadav, shared the family's shock at her sudden demise. He highlighted the urgent need for better healthcare access and support for protesters.
The tragic deaths of these two dedicated mid-day meal cooks underscore the challenges faced by frontline workers in demanding fair compensation and basic rights. As the community mourns their loss, there is a renewed call for improved working conditions and adequate healthcare for all.
