Police Investigate Threatening Poster in Meghalaya's West Garo Hills District
In a concerning development, the police in Meghalaya's West Garo Hills district are investigating a poster that surfaced in the district headquarters, Tura, purportedly threatening Garos to leave the area. The authorities suspect it to be a deliberate attempt to create anxiety and disturb the law and order situation in the region.
The poster, found pasted on an electric pole near a law college, was printed on a plain white sheet and claimed to be issued by a 'Plain Belt Area Committee' of the 'ISIS-K'. It warned Garos living in the West Garo Hills to vacate the land by 2027.
Meghalaya Cabinet Minister Condemns Intimidation Marcuise N Marak, an MLA from the Williamnagar constituency, strongly condemned the act of intimidation and threat. He emphasized the values of harmony, mutual respect, and unity among all communities in Meghalaya, regardless of religion or caste.
The district administration has been alerted, and efforts are underway to identify and take action against those responsible for the provocative act. The police have registered a case and are conducting a forensic analysis of the poster.
Efforts to Ensure Peace and Unity Superintendent of Police Abraham Sangma stated that the preliminary assessment suggests a deliberate attempt by individuals with vested interests to disrupt the peace in the district. Measures are being taken to track down the perpetrators.
The incident comes on the heels of recent tensions in the district following a fatal altercation at an illegal stone quarry. The authorities emphasize the importance of remaining calm, united, and vigilant, while reassuring the public of their commitment to protecting the people and the land.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing situation as authorities work to maintain peace and harmony in the region.
