Antique Jewellery Worth Rs 2 Crore Stolen From Thiruvananthapuram's Kowdiar Palace
Police authorities have initiated an investigation into the theft of antique jewellery and other valuables worth Rs 2 crore from the prestigious Kowdiar Palace in Thiruvananthapuram, the former residence of the Travancore royal family.
Delayed Complaint Triggers Formal Probe The theft, which reportedly occurred in October last year, was formally reported to the authorities by the royal family on March 13. A theft case has been registered under Section 305 of BNS, and the investigation process has commenced.
Probe Underway with Expert Involvement An officer involved in the case stated, "Today, we have documented statements from the residents, and forensic experts have gathered fingerprints from the crime scenes. The investigation has just begun."
Ornate Ornaments Missing from First-floor Locker The complaint, filed by royal family member Aswathi Thirunal Gowri Lakshmi Bayi, revealed that the stolen ornaments, many of which are antiques, were stored in a locker within an iron cupboard on the first floor of the palace. The missing items include precious metals, stones, and coins that have been treasured by the family for generations.
Family Initially Hesitant to Report Initially, the palace had opted for an investigation without a formal complaint. However, following police advice, a complaint was lodged last week to launch a thorough probe into the matter. A police official mentioned, "The family believed the ornaments might have been misplaced within the palace premises."
Tight Security Measures in Place The palace is equipped with a security system managed by a private agency hired by the family, along with CCTV surveillance across the premises. Statements from all employees will also be recorded as part of the ongoing investigation.
