Telangana Chief Minister Vows to Lower Minimum Age for Lok Sabha Membership

In a promising move, Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has aounced plans to introduce a resolution in the Legislative Assembly in August, advocating for a reduction in the minimum age requirement for Lok Sabha membership from 25 to 21.

Revolutionizing Eligibility Criteria

Revolutionizing the political landscape, Reddy proposed that individuals aged 21 and above should be eligible to contest elections for Lok Sabha and state assemblies. Additionally, he suggested lowering the minimum age for Rajya Sabha and state Legislative Council memberships to 25, down from the current 30.

Push for Legislative Change

Reddy expressed his intention to present a representation to Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, urging for the introduction of a revised minimum age Bill in Parliament. He called upon the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at the Centre to consider initiating discussions on this proposed legislation during the ongoing parliamentary session.

Furthermore, Reddy advocated for the establishment of a Joint Parliamentary Committee to address this pressing issue.

Acknowledging Youth-Led Movements

Reddy's aouncement follows the recent successful protests led by the youth-centric Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which resulted in the resignation of former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Praising the determination of the younger generation, Reddy emphasized the importance of holding the ruling government accountable for its actions.

He commended the CJP leadership and the youth activists who participated in the protests for their dedication to promoting accountability in governance.

Promoting Youth Representation

Addressing concerns about the delayed support from the Congress party towards the youth protests, Reddy clarified that their intention was to provide a platform for the young voices to be heard without seeking political gains. He emphasized the need for increased representation of Generation Z in legislative bodies.

Reddy highlighted the need to grant young individuals in India the opportunity to excel in the political arena, advocating for a system that mirrors countries where young leaders can ascend to prominent positions at a younger age.
