Addressing a press conference at Rail Bhawan on Sunday, February 1, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw unveiled the ambitious plans for the Railway Budget 2026. The focus remains on strengthening railway infrastructure, expanding capacity, and enhancing passenger safety.
The Indian Railways has received its highest-ever capex allocation of Rs 2,93,030 crore in the Union Budget 2026-27, with a total outlay of Rs 2,78,030 crore. Minister Vaishnaw emphasized that safety is the top priority, with a significant amount of Rs 120 lakh crore allocated to safety-related expenditures.
The Minister highlighted the remarkable progress in safety outcomes due to sustained investments, with railway accidents reduced by nearly 95%. He outlined key focus areas such as enhanced track maintenance, rapid deployment of safety systems, station redevelopment, and improved customer care.
Vaishnaw showcased infrastructure achievements including the construction of 35,000 km of new tracks and electrification of over 995% of the broad-gauge network. The budget also allocates funds for various projects aimed at enhancing rail transport and reducing pollution.
The record allocation reinforces the pivotal role of Indian Railways in national development, economic growth, and inclusive coectivity. With a vision of Viksit Bharat, the Railways Ministry aims to deliver faster coectivity, efficient logistics, and resilient infrastructure.
While the Railway Budget captures attention, the tech industry faces challenges due to the memory chip crunch caused by the AI frenzy. This domino effect has disrupted Silicon Valley and could impact the prices of personal computers and smartphones.
