The Budget Session of Parliament 2026 kicked off today with President Droupadi Murmu set to address the joint sitting of the two Houses. The Economic Survey is scheduled for January 29, followed by the Union Budget 2026–27 presentation on February 1. Prepared by the Economic Division of the Finance Ministry, the Survey reviews economic performance and indicators for 2025–26 and outlines the upcoming fiscal year's outlook.
The Lok Sabha has nine pending Bills, including the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (Amendment) Bill and the Securities Markets Code, currently under the parliamentary finance panel's review. The government is set to push its legislative agenda, with discussions on key issues like MGNREGA replacement and Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman participated in the traditional 'halwa' ceremony, signifying the final stage of Union Budget 2026-27 preparation. The ceremony, held at the historic North Block on Raisina Hill, precedes the 'lock-in' of officials involved in budget preparation.
