Police in Uttarakhand have taken action against unknown individuals associated with Bajrang Dal following a protest that turned violent in Kotdwar. The incident stemmed from a dispute involving Deepak Kumar, a gym owner who intervened in the harassment of an elderly Muslim shopkeeper named Vakeel Ahmed. The FIR, registered on Sunday, includes charges of unlawful assembly, obstructing public servants, and promoting enmity.
On January 26, Deepak Kumar, while at a friend's shop in Pauri Garhwal, stood up against a group of men who were threatening Ahmed over the name of his shop. In a video capturing the incident, Kumar boldly questions the mob's double standards and emphasizes equality before the law, identifying himself as "Mohammad Deepak." He acted to protect Ahmed's right to run his shop without fear.
According to a sub-inspector's complaint, the situation escalated on Saturday when a group gathered near Kumar's gym, chanting slogans and causing a disturbance. The protesters, allegedly affiliated with Bajrang Dal, not only targeted Kumar but also disrupted traffic on the national highway, creating chaos and spreading religious animosity.
Law enforcement officials intervened to disperse the unruly group and have since initiated an investigation. Senior Superintendent of Police Sarvesh Panwar confirmed the FIR registration and assured that steps are being taken to identify and hold the perpetrators accountable. Additional security measures have been implemented to maintain peace and prevent further disturbances.
As the probe continues, authorities urge both parties to cooperate and uphold communal harmony. The police are closely monitoring the situation to prevent any future disruptions. Leaders of Bajrang Dal were not available for immediate comment on the incident.
In other news, the recently unveiled Union Budget for 2026-27 introduced targeted changes affecting various groups, including modifications to STT rates for F&O trades and incentives for equity investments from PROIs. Additionally, adjustments were made to TCS rates for foreign education and medical treatment, along with simplifications in income tax rules for enhanced compliance.
