CM Omar Abdullah Emphasizes Need for Statehood to Restore Constitutional Guarantees

In a bold move to push for the restoration of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir, Chief Minister and National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah led a protest in the national capital, highlighting the foundational importance of statehood in restoring constitutional guarantees to the region.

Omar Abdullah stressed the significance of statehood, stating, "What does (Article) 370 or 371 mean without statehood? A union territory has no powers. There is no state list or a concurrent list, and that is the crux of the fight. Any special status accorded to J&K will depend on power-sharing between the Centre and the state, which is not possible in a Union Territory."

The National Conference, weary of waiting for statehood, decided to take their demand to New Delhi during the monsoon session of Parliament. Despite facing challenges, including the Cockroach Janta Party's march, the protest served as a powerful reminder to the central government of its commitments in Parliament and to the Supreme Court.

The NC invited national leaders and parties, including Congress Parliamentary Party leader Sonia Gandhi, to join their cause, but only Congress leaders from the J&K government were seen standing in solidarity. Omar Abdullah acknowledged the challenges faced by allies in reaching the protest venue amidst chaotic circumstances in Delhi.

Omar Abdullah affirmed that the protest in Delhi marked just the begiing of their campaign and a call to the central government to honor its promises. He emphasized that the restoration of statehood is paramount and caot be delayed. Responding to criticism for not advocating the restoration of Article 370, Omar clarified that the focus on statehood was deliberate to prevent the Centre from using Article 370 as an excuse to deny statehood.

As the demands for statehood and constitutional guarantees echo through the streets of Delhi, the National Conference remains unwavering in its commitment to securing the rights and autonomy of Jammu and Kashmir.
