Former Odisha Chief Minister Criticizes Change in Indian Hockey Team's Jersey Color

In a bold statement on Thursday, former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik questioned the decision by Hockey India to alter the national hockey team's jersey color from traditional blue to saffron. Patnaik alleged that the change was made under pressure from the BJP government in the state, despite the Odisha government being the official sponsor of the team.

Patnaik criticized the BJP-led government in Odisha for its "obsession" with changing the colors of various structures, including buildings, buses, and bridges. He condemned the attempt to politicize a national game like hockey, stating that it has hurt the sentiments of sports enthusiasts across the country and undermined Odisha's proud history of supporting national hockey.

During his tenure as chief minister, Patnaik played a pivotal role in bolstering hockey in the country. He spearheaded a Rs 140 crore sponsorship deal with Hockey India in 2018, which was later extended. This support led to significant achievements for the national men's and women's teams, including the men's first Olympic medal in 41 years and the women's best-ever Olympic finish.
