In an unsigned statement, the Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) has declared an intensified campaign against illegal poppy cultivation, narcotics trafficking, and encroachment by illegal immigrants. This comes following an incident in Manipur's Kangpokpi district where suspected members of a Naga militant group set ablaze houses belonging to the Kuki-Zo community.
The incident took place at K Songlung-II village under Kangchup police station, with three houses and an SUV being set on fire. Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries. Police, led by DIG S P Kangpokpi, have swiftly responded to the situation.
While a faction of the ZUF has claimed responsibility for the attack, a Kuki-Zo group has demanded action within 24 hours or threatened to shut down the highways. Videos of the incident circulating on social media show the burning houses in the hilly area.
The Kuki-Zo groups have vehemently denied involvement in poppy cultivation, stating that the affected structures are permanent residential units, not farmhouses. Various civil bodies, including the Indigenous Tribal Leader’s Forum and Sadar Hills Chief Association, have condemned the ZUF's actions.
The Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU), a Kuki-Zo group based in Kangpokpi, has issued an ultimatum to the Manipur government, demanding the arrest of those responsible within 24 hours. Failure to comply may lead to a total shutdown of National Highway-2 and National Highway-37.
The COTU has stated that it will not be held responsible for any consequences arising from the potential blockade. This incident follows a reported gunfight earlier this month between Naga and Kuki militant groups over the issue of poppy cultivation.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has postponed its decision on participating in the T20 World Cup. A final decision is expected by Monday following discussions between the chairman and the Prime Minister. Former cricketer Basit Ali has cautioned against boycotting India, warning of possible sanctions from the International Cricket Council.
