Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Expresses Discontent Over Detainment, Unable to Lead Friday Prayers

In a recent development, Kashmir's chief cleric, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, disclosed on Tuesday that he had been detained at his residence for three consecutive Fridays in January. The renowned religious leader was set to lead prayers at Srinagar's Jamia Masjid to observe Shab-e-Barat, a significant night of prayer in the Islamic calendar.

Sharing images of the locked gates at Jamia Masjid and his residence, Mirwaiz expressed his frustration, stating, "As mosques across the region illuminate with devotion on this sacred night, Jama Masjid Srinagar remains closed under surveillance. Once again, I find myself detained at home. Shab-e-Baraat is just another addition to the long list of instances since 2019 when prayers at the Valley's largest mosque were forcefully halted."

Mirwaiz Calls for Transparency in Mosque Closures

Emphasizing the necessity for an explanation regarding the closure of the mosque, Mirwaiz remarked, "No reasons provided, just locked gates and silence. This stark contrast demands a justification for those advocating 'normalcy' and 'naya Kashmir'." Mirwaiz's attempts to lead Friday prayers in January were thwarted, with him being allowed to address congregational prayers at the mosque on Jan 30 but subsequently prohibited from leaving his residence on Feb 3.

Prior to the incident, Mirwaiz had publicized his intention to lead the Shab-e-Barat prayer at the mosque via social media, igniting a discussion on religious freedom and individual expression.
