Former Indian cricketer, Sanjay Manjrekar, has taken aim at Suryakumar Yadav's cautious batting style in the ongoing T20 World Cup, suggesting it could be a risky strategy for the team's success. As India gears up to face South Africa in the Super 8 opener at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Manjrekar highlighted concerns over Yadav's approach, deviating from his usual aggressive stance at the crease.
Commending Yadav's resilient 84-run iings in the tournament opener against the United States of America, where he steered India from a precarious 77 for six to a match-wiing total, Manjrekar acknowledged the batsman's adaptability. However, with a somewhat shaky top-order display in the tournament thus far, Yadav has been maintaining a steady tempo throughout the group stages.
"There is something that I am seeing in Suryakumar Yadav which I’m not liking too much. Against Pakistan, where India lost a couple of wickets, he really pulled down the shutters quite a lot," Manjrekar expressed on his Instagram platform.
While Yadav has amassed 164 runs in the tournament, ranking second among Indian batters, his strike rate of 136.13 pales in comparison to Ishan Kishan's explosive 202.29 strike rate. Manjrekar cautioned against such cautious play in T20 cricket, emphasizing the dangers of a senior player or captain feeling compelled to anchor the iings and set a specific score target.
"In T20 cricket, that is a dangerous thing to do, where a senior player or captain feels like he has got to stay in, especially while batting first. Surya must be careful about that," Manjrekar advised.
As India faces South Africa in a crucial fixture, the spotlight remains on Yadav's approach and its impact on the team's performance.
