MHA Extends Deadline for Commission of Inquiry on Manipur Violence
In a recent development, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has granted another extension to the Commission of Inquiry tasked with investigating the 2023 Manipur violence. The MHA notification issued on Thursday stipulates that the Commission must now submit its report to the Central government by November 20, 2026.
New Leadership in Place The Commission faced a setback earlier this year when Justice Ajay Lamba, its former Chief Justice, resigned three months before the report was due. Following this, former Supreme Court judge Justice Balbir Singh Chauhan was appointed as the new chairman, alongside retired IAS officer Himanshu Sekhar Das and retired IPS officer Aloka Prabhakar as members of the Commission.
Multiple Deadline Extensions The three-member panel was established on June 4, 2023, in response to the violent events that unfolded in Manipur on May 3, 2023. Since its inception, the Commission's deadline has been extended five times, with the most recent extension pushing the submission date to November 20, 2026.
Ongoing Investigation The Commission's ongoing inquiry into the Manipur violence, which resulted in over 250 deaths, underscores the importance of a thorough and comprehensive investigation to bring justice to the victims and their families. The MHA's commitment to ensuring a timely and thorough report highlights the government's dedication to addressing acts of violence and upholding the rule of law.
