Magisterial Inquiry Ordered into Alleged Police Firing Incident in Jammu & Kashmir

The Jammu & Kashmir administration has taken a significant step by ordering a magisterial inquiry into the tragic death of a local youth in alleged police firing in Bhaderwah’s Jai area last week. The order was issued by Doda District Magistrate Krishan Lal, following the establishment of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) by the police.

Police have initiated an “open” FIR against unidentified individuals for various offenses, including attempted murder, assault on a public servant, and theft under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The incident involved the fatal shooting of 30-year-old auto driver Arif Hussain from Cheeka village in Doda during a confrontation between police persoel and alleged cattle smugglers in the scenic Jai Valley near Bhaderwah.

While official details are yet to be released by the police, sources indicate that the incident unfolded as police were interrogating individuals at a checkpoint based on information about possible bovine smuggling. Following an alleged attack by suspects, Hussain sustained severe injuries in what authorities describe as an accidental discharge during the ensuing scuffle. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries en route to the hospital.

The untimely demise of Hussain has sparked outrage, leading to protests and a shutdown in Doda and Kishtwar districts. Mobile internet services in the region remain suspended as tensions run high. Hussain, survived by his pregnant wife, mother, and a minor child, hails from a family with a tragic history. His father, Mohammad Iqbal, a former special police officer, fell victim to terrorist violence in March 1999.

With demands for an impartial investigation echoing from Hussain's bereaved family, the case has garnered widespread attention. The administration's decision to conduct a magisterial inquiry reflects a commitment to transparency and justice in the face of this unfortunate incident.
