Sonam Wangchuk's 25-Day Fast: Appeals and Support Pour In

As Sonam Wangchuk's hunger strike entered its 25th day, a delegation comprising 12 members of the Kargil Democratic Alliance and the Apex Body Leh visited the hospital where he is being treated. Their purpose was to inquire about his health and appeal to him to consider ending his fast.

A delegation from Ladakh, currently in Delhi to meet climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, faced obstacles in seeing him at the Medanta hospital on Wednesday. KDA co-chairman Sajjad Kargili expressed disappointment at not being allowed to meet Wangchuk despite waiting for four hours.

The Ladakh MP Mohammad Hanifa Jan stated, "It seems that Sonam Wangchuk is still 'under detention', as his doctor informed us that we would be allowed to meet him only if the police have no objection."

Wangchuk, who was moved to Medanta hospital in Gurgaon from Safdarjung hospital after his wife's petition, expressed his willingness to end the hunger strike if the Centre met his key demands. These include a commitment to not take punitive action against protesting students.

Despite losing 11 kg on the 25th day of his fast, Wangchuk remains resolute, commending the student protesters for their resilience. He urged the government to refrain from using force against the students and repeal cases against them to end his fast.

Union ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh visited Wangchuk at the hospital, showing solidarity with his cause. TMC MP Sagarika Ghose, along with MPs Vivek Tankha and John Brittas, also met Wangchuk at Medanta, urging him to consider ending his hunger strike.
