Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, has raised concerns over the safety of Kashmiri individuals residing outside the Valley, following a recent incident in Dehradun where two Kashmiri brothers were assaulted while selling shawls.
The incident took place in Uttarakhand's capital, where 18-year-old Tabish and his brother, Danish, were attacked by assailants after revealing their Kashmiri identity to a shopkeeper in Vikas Nagar. The brothers, who visit Uttarakhand aually during winter to sell shawls, were severely beaten by the shopkeeper and two unidentified individuals.
Tabish sustained head injuries and required seven sutures, leading to the arrest of one individual in coection with the assault.
Omar Abdullah condemned the attack and stated that such incidents against Kashmiris in different parts of the country are unacceptable. He emphasized the need to ensure the safety and security of Kashmiri individuals living outside their home state.
Abdullah expressed hope that the Union government and state authorities would take necessary measures to prevent such acts of violence and provide protection to Kashmiris across India.
Political leaders from the Kashmir Valley, including Iltija Mufti, Sajad Lone, Imran Nabi, and M Y Tarigami, have called for stringent action against the attackers and demanded justice for the victims. They highlighted the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring accountability for such violent incidents.
The repeated assaults on Kashmiri individuals, particularly those engaged in selling shawls, have raised concerns about the safety and security of Kashmiris working in different parts of the country during the winter season.
This incident is not isolated, as previous attacks on Kashmiri shawl vendors have been reported in Uttarakhand and other regions. The community has faced violence and discrimination, prompting calls for immediate action to address the recurring pattern of assaults on Kashmiris.
Efforts are being made to create awareness and advocate for the protection of Kashmiri individuals who travel outside the Valley for work and livelihood opportunities.
