Over 800 Individuals Apprehended in a Month as Helpline Calls Surge
In a remarkable turn of events, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has revealed that the desperation of parents seeking help with their children's drug addiction issues has driven him to launch a vigorous campaign against drug abuse and narco-terrorism in the region. The initiative has seen swift results, with more than 1,400 individuals apprehended under the NDPS Act this year, over 800 of them in the last month alone.
Focus on Rehabilitation and Awareness Sinha emphasized the importance of tackling the issue at its root by seizing narcotics and imposing strict penalties on those involved. He stressed the significance of raising awareness and providing rehabilitation services as key components of the strategy. Efforts are underway to ensure that every health facility in the UT has a designated bed for addiction victims, facilitating immediate access to support.
Increased Reporting and Societal Impact The ongoing 100-day campaign has not only led to a reduction in the stigma associated with reporting drug-related crimes but has also resulted in a six-fold increase in calls to the MANAS helpline. Sinha highlighted the positive societal impact of individuals coming forward to report drug peddlers and users, contributing to a safer environment.
Combatting Drug Trafficking and Terrorism Sinha underscored the direct link between drug trafficking and terrorism, emphasizing the need to enhance security at entry points where drugs are smuggled into the region. The administration has identified specific areas on the Line of Control as key distribution points and has taken decisive action, including the demolition of properties associated with narcotics distribution.
Support for Action Against Culprits Despite criticism from certain quarters, Sinha defended the crackdown on properties linked to drug trafficking, stating that society's well-being takes precedence over individual interests. He affirmed that the majority of the populace supports stringent measures against those involved in drug distribution.
