Indian cricket sensation Jemimah Rodrigues has been appointed as the new captain of Delhi Capitals (DC) for the upcoming Women's Premier League (WPL) 2026 season. The 25-year-old star will be taking over the reins from the former captain Meg Laing, who was released by the team before the auction.
Expressing her excitement and gratitude, Rodrigues stated, "It is an absolute honor to be named captain of the Delhi Capitals. I am deeply grateful to the owners and the support staff for entrusting me with this leadership role. This opportunity means a lot to me, especially considering the special place DC holds in my heart since the inception of WPL."
Rodrigues, who was retained by DC ahead of the mega auction, expressed her eagerness to lead the team and create new memories with both familiar faces and new teammates. She emphasized her determination to lead DC to a successful season and break the barrier that has eluded them in the past three years.
Franchise owner Parth Jindal had earlier stated that DC was keen on having an Indian player as the captain for the new season. With Rodrigues now at the helm, the team looks forward to her leadership and on-field prowess to guide them to victory.
Rodrigues boasts an impressive record, having scored 507 runs in 27 matches for DC at a strike rate of 139.66 with three half-centuries. Her stellar performances and leadership qualities make her a formidable captain for the upcoming WPL season.
Rodrigues also credited Meg Laing for her guidance and inspiration, acknowledging the former captain's role in shaping the team's culture and success over the years.
Apart from her success in the WPL, Rodrigues played a crucial role in India's ODI World Cup victory, showcasing her talent and determination on the international stage. Her unbeaten 127 off 134 balls in the semi-final against Australia was a standout performance that propelled India to the final.
With Rodrigues leading the charge, Delhi Capitals fans can expect an exciting and competitive season ahead. Stay tuned for more updates on the WPL 2026 season and Rodrigues' journey as the captain of DC.
