Jairam Ramesh Calls for Naval Expansion Over "Commercial" Transshipment Port
In a bold move, Congress Rajya Sabha MP Jairam Ramesh has urged Union Minister of Defence Rajnath Singh to reconsider the controversial Great Nicobar Island (GNI) project, advocating for the expansion of existing defence assets on the island instead. Ramesh has challenged the government's stance on the project, arguing that it is primarily driven by commercial interests rather than genuine security concerns.
Alternatives to the GNI Project Ramesh highlighted the presence of various defense assets on the island, including INS Baaz in Campbell Bay, INS Kardip, INS Kohassa, INS Utkrosh, INS Jarawa, and the Car Nicobar Air Force Station, as viable alternatives to the proposed transshipment port. He emphasized the potential for expanding these existing assets, such as the runway at INS Baaz, to enhance India's strategic capabilities with minimal environmental impact.
Environmental Concerns and Military Capability Expressing concerns over the ecological implications of the GNI project, Ramesh underscored that the transshipment port would not significantly bolster the country's military capabilities. The proposed infrastructure, including an integrated township, container port, power plant, and airport, has raised alarms about its potential environmental ramifications.
Advocating for Sustainable Solutions Ramesh's letter to Rajnath Singh marks his continued efforts to hold the government accountable for its development projects. He has previously written to Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav and Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram, challenging the accuracy of government documents and highlighting violations of environmental and tribal rights.
By advocating for sustainable and strategic alternatives, Ramesh aims to steer the country towards a path of responsible defense development that prioritizes national security without compromising environmental integrity. Stay tuned for more updates on this evolving story.
