In a nod to history and heroism, the Ministry of Railways made a significant aouncement on January 20, 2021, renaming the iconic Kalka Mail as the Netaji Express. This transformative change pays homage to the legendary freedom fighter, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, on his birth aiversary.
Originally established in the 19th century, the Kalka Mail has been a cherished service coecting Howrah with Kalka. However, its rechristening as the Netaji Express holds deep historical significance, commemorating Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's daring escape during India's struggle for independence.
The Eastern Railway's Howrah-Kalka Mail played a pivotal role in Netaji's escape from Calcutta (now Kolkata) during the freedom movement. Disguised, Netaji boarded the train from Gomoh station on January 18, 1941, marking a chapter of courage and defiance in Indian history.
With a commitment to passenger safety and comfort, the railway authorities made a strategic decision to replace conventional ICF coaches with modern LHB coaches on the Netaji Express. These new coaches offer superior amenities, increased spaciousness, and enhanced comfort, ensuring a delightful travel experience for passengers.
As the Netaji Express embarks on a new journey, it symbolizes resilience, transformation, and the enduring spirit of freedom. The renaming of this historic train serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by our national heroes and their unwavering commitment to the nation's cause.
