New Forecast: Southwest Monsoon Set to Make Early Arrival in Kerala
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted an early onset of the Southwest Monsoon in Kerala, with expectations for it to arrive on May 26, preceding the usual onset date of June 1. This early arrival would mark the third consecutive year of the monsoon reaching Kerala ahead of schedule.
According to IMD, the monsoon is expected to make its initial appearance over the South Andaman Sea and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands within the next 24 hours. The Southwest Monsoon typically reaches these regions around May 22 each year, signaling the imminent arrival over the Indian subcontinent.
Pre-monsoon showers have been prevalent in Kerala and various parts of southern India throughout this week, setting the stage for the monsoon's grand entrance. The monsoon season, which spans from June to September, plays a crucial role in sustaining agriculture, water resources, reservoir levels, and the overall economy of the country.
Forecasted Rainfall and Outlook IMD has projected below-average rainfall for the upcoming monsoon season, estimating it to be around 92 percent of the Long Period Average (LPA) of 880 mm, based on historical data from 1971 to 2020. This forecast indicates a potential challenge for sectors reliant on adequate rainfall for their operations.
As India gears up for the monsoon's arrival, the anticipation of its impact on various regions and sectors remains high. Stay informed and up-to-date with the latest weather updates by following us on Instagram.
