Following a high-level review meeting chaired by GMDA CEO, P C Meena, in January, the Gurgaon Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has aounced the selection of three key roads for its Phase-I transformation project aimed at enhancing lane discipline, pedestrian safety, and technology-driven enforcement.
The three roads selected for this ambitious project are high-visibility and high-traffic arteries in Gurgaon, where GMDA's earlier infrastructure upgrades are either in place or nearing completion. These roads have been identified as ideal candidates for setting new benchmarks in commuter behavior and urban mobility across the city.
GMDA CEO, P C Meena, emphasized, "Disciplined traffic movement, pedestrian safety, and optimal use of existing infrastructure remain our core focus. These model stretches will showcase the future of transportation in Gurgaon."
The model road project will include a range of comprehensive upgrades, such as refreshed lane markings, clearly defined zebra crossings with pedestrian signals, optimized traffic lights, fully operational service roads, removal of encroachments and illegal parking, digital informatory signages, bollards, road studs, improved street lighting, and public aouncement systems.
Enforcement on these roads will be primarily camera-based, with e-challans issued through CCTV surveillance to reduce corruption risks and ensure smooth traffic flow.
Notably, the selected roads have faced issues with encroachments due to illegal parking and roadside vendors in the past. The GMDA had previously initiated renovation works on Hamilton Court and Vyapar Kendra roads in February 2024, but the project remained unfinished, leading to worsening traffic congestion in the area.
GMDA executive engineer Amit Godara stated, "Major development works were already underway on these stretches. A budget of Rs 20 crore each for Hamilton and Vyapar Kendra roads and Rs 10 crore for the MG road stretch has now been finalized to transform them into model roads, catering to their high traffic volume."
These efforts align with GMDA's commitment to enhancing infrastructure and ensuring safe, efficient transportation for the residents of Gurgaon. The model roads project aims to revolutionize commuter experiences and establish new benchmarks for road infrastructure in the city.
After the completion of Phase I on the priority roads, GMDA officials have outlined plans for a broader Phase II rollout, which will include revamping additional corridors like Atul Kataria Chowk-Sector 29, Rajeev Chowk-Mayfield Garden (Medanta Road), Hero Honda Chowk-Sector 29, Sector 47 dividing road, and Rampura Chowk-Pataudi Road.
