Union Law Ministry Rescinds Mistaken Notification, Corrects Bieial Election Results

The Union Law and Justice Ministry has taken swift action to rectify a mistake in a gazette notification regarding the publication of election results. The initial notification, titled “Publication of result of Bieial election to the Council of States from the State of Mizoram,” was rescinded after it mistakenly renotified the results of by-elections to three West Bengal Rajya Sabha seats.

Government and Election Commission sources confirmed that the rescinded notification, issued on Monday, contained erroneous information pertaining to the election results. The Legislative Department, in a subsequent gazette notification, exercised its powers under the Representation of the People Act, 1951, to rescind the previous notifications related to the Bieial election to the Council of States.

The rescinded notification, although titled for Mizoram, actually repeated the results of the by-elections to three Rajya Sabha seats from West Bengal, where former Trinamool Congress MPs Sushmita Dev, Prakash Chik Baraik, and Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, now part of the BJP, were re-elected in July.

Following the rescinding of the incorrect notification, the Law Ministry promptly issued a corrected notification. The new notification accurately aounced the election of Zoram People’s Movement leader Khiangte Laltluangkima to a seat representing Mizoram in the Council of States.
