Following a tragic stampede that resulted in the deaths of six individuals and injuries to over 100 at the aual festival at the Lairai Devi temple in Shirgao village, North Goa last year, significant safety measures have been put in place to prevent such incidents in the future.
The upcoming Jatra of Shree Lairai Devi in Goa, scheduled for April 21, will witness a range of enhanced safety protocols to ensure the well-being of attendees. These measures include continuous CCTV surveillance, removal of encroachments along the main corridor, watchtowers at strategic points, barricading, buffer zones, multiple entry and exit chaels, emergency evacuation routes, volunteers for crowd control, and a dedicated control room equipped with CCTV and public address systems for supervision.
The Jatra, a revered event dedicated to Goddess Lairai Devi, attracts thousands of devoted attendees called 'Dhonds' from across Goa and neighboring states. One of the highlights of the festival is a fire-walking ritual where Dhonds circle a fire pit and walk barefoot across burning embers, captivating spectators with its spiritual significance.
An investigative committee established to probe the stampede revealed that the incident could have been avoided with proper plaing and enforcement. The tragedy was attributed to a combination of poor organization, overlooked directives, and insufficient infrastructure, underscoring the need for improved crowd control mechanisms and modern surveillance tools.
The committee identified overcrowding on a sloped pathway as the immediate cause of the stampede, exacerbated by a sudden surge and movement of Dhonds. It emphasized the importance of continuous CCTV surveillance, public address systems throughout the venue, emergency evacuation routes, mock drills, multiple entry and exit points, and adequate buffer zones to prevent overcrowding and ensure swift response to emergencies.
With these robust safety measures in place, authorities are committed to ensuring the upcoming Jatra at the Lairai Devi temple is a safe and memorable experience for all participants.
