Students Stage Protest Outside SDM’s Office Over School Facilities

Approximately 50 students, primarily from classes 6 to 8, made a powerful statement as they protested outside the SDM’s office in Bihar’s Gaya district. Their demonstration highlighted concerns over the quality of essential facilities at Simuara Middle School, including mid-day meals, drinking water, toilets, electricity, classroom fans, uniforms, teaching standards, and overall school infrastructure.

The protest at Simuara Middle School adds to a growing wave of student-led demonstrations across the country, fueled by issues such as the alleged NEET paper leak and broader education concerns. The students marched approximately 4 km to the Tikari Sub-Divisional Office to voice their grievances and demand improvements in their learning environment.

The impactful protest prompted swift action, including the initiation of departmental inquiries, show-cause notices to school staff, and the suspension of salaries for the day of the demonstration pending satisfactory explanations. A viral video of the protest captured the determination of the students as they refused to disperse until their concerns were addressed.

Responding to the protest, Tikari SDM Praveen Kundan established a three-member inquiry committee to assess the situation at the school. The committee, comprising officials from various departments, is tasked with inspecting the school, gathering information, and submitting a comprehensive report on the identified issues.

Following the protest and subsequent inquiries, school authorities have been directed to address the students' complaints within a specified timeline. The headmaster received a warning to resolve the issues related to basic facilities promptly, while an inspection team is conducting a thorough investigation to ensure necessary improvements are implemented.

Additionally, District Programme Officer Nityam Kumar Gaurav and Block Education Officer Dr. Abhay Kumar Raman conducted a surprise inspection of the school to assess the teaching standards, food quality, and overall amenities. The officials emphasized the importance of cleanliness, classroom repairs, nutritious meals, and adherence to the prescribed timetable for classes.

In response to the protest, the Block Education Officer issued show-cause notices to the headmaster and seven teachers, seeking explanations for the circumstances leading to the demonstration. Allegations of insects in the mid-day meal and inadequate teaching practices were addressed, with warnings of departmental action for non-compliance.

The Bihar Education Department in Patna has been urged to respond to the unfolding situation at Simuara Middle School. The ongoing dialogue between school authorities and officials aims to resolve the students' concerns and ensure a conducive learning environment moving forward.
