FIFA President Giai Infantino is under scrutiny for potential breaches of political neutrality, with a complaint filed against him involving his coections to US President Donald Trump. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has been urged to investigate these allegations, following a controversial World Cup red-card decision.

An advocacy group, FairSquare, has lodged a complaint against Infantino, accusing him of violating IOC regulations on multiple occasions. The complaint raises concerns about Infantino's alleged intervention in overturning a one-match ban for US striker Folarin Balogun, enabling him to participate in a crucial World Cup match against Belgium.

Infantino has confirmed receiving a phone call from Trump, who publicly advocated for Balogun's eligibility. However, the FIFA president maintains that he did not interfere with the disciplinary process.

Balogun was red-carded during the US's Round of 32 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina for a challenge on Tarik Muharemovic. Despite Balogun's suspension, the US managed to secure a 2-0 win with 10 players on the field.

FIFA issued a statement on July 5, citing Article 27 of its disciplinary code to suspend Balogun's ban for a probationary period of one year, without providing detailed reasoning.

President Trump defended his intervention in the matter, stating that he merely requested a review as he disagreed with the referee's decision. Infantino emphasized the independence of FIFA's judicial committees, highlighting the importance of maintaining football's credibility and integrity.

FairSquare's complaint points out five specific instances where Infantino allegedly breached neutrality rules, including his endorsement of Trump for the Nobel Prize and supportive social media posts following Trump's inauguration. The group also questions Infantino's association with a FIFA fan site for the 2026 World Cup, which they claim was part of a data-harvesting operation linked to President Trump.

A separate complaint filed by FairSquare with FIFA's ethics committee has garnered support from the Norwegian football federation and 50 members of the European Parliament.
