The Ministry of Railways has aounced a significant budgetary allocation of Rs 2,711 crore for the development of railway infrastructure in Delhi for the financial year 2026-27. This marks a substantial increase from the previous allocation of Rs 2,593 crore in the fiscal year 2025-26.
The railway projects in the Union Territory of Delhi come under the administrative control of Northern Railway's Delhi Division. Addressing a press conference on the Union Budget allocation for the Ministry of Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the key initiatives for Delhi.
"A record railway budget of Rs 2,711 crore has been allocated for Delhi. The aouncement of the first bullet train from Delhi to Varanasi signifies a major leap in high-speed coectivity," Vaishnaw stated.
The Railway Minister unveiled plans for the Delhi-Varanasi-Siliguri high-speed rail corridor, which aims to reduce travel time significantly. The journey from Delhi to Varanasi is expected to take just 3 hours and 50 minutes, while the Varanasi-Siliguri route via Patna will take around 2 hours and 55 minutes.
This new corridor is set to create an economic boost, coecting Delhi through Uttar Pradesh and Bihar to West Bengal, fostering growth in healthcare, education, and various economic activities.
The national transporter revealed that infrastructure projects worth Rs 8,976 crore are currently underway in Delhi. These projects include track creation, station redevelopment, and safety enhancements, aiming to transform the railway infrastructure in the region.
Under the Amrit Station Scheme, 13 railway stations in Delhi have been earmarked for complete redevelopment, with a total investment of Rs 5,887 crore. The stations include Adarshnagar Delhi, Anand Vihar, Bijwasan, Delhi Cantt, Delhi Sarai Rohilla, Delhi Shahadra, Hazrat Nizamuddin, Narela, New Delhi, Sabzi Mandi, Safdarjung, and Tilak Bridge.
Additionally, Delhi has achieved 100% electrification and witnessed the introduction of premium train services, with Vande Bharat Express and Amrit Bharat trains enhancing coectivity.
The Ministry of Railways has secured its highest-ever budgetary allocation in the Union Budget 2026-27, with a total outlay of Rs 2,78,030 crore. The capital expenditure for the year stands at a record Rs 2,93,030 crore, reflecting the government's focus on high-speed coectivity, freight services, and safety enhancements.
