Delhi High Court Denies Interim Relief to World Champion Wrestler Vinesh Phogat
The hopes of two-time World Championships bronze medallist and Olympian wrestler Vinesh Phogat to participate in the upcoming Asian Games have been dashed as the Delhi High Court denied her interim relief on Monday. The court has set the next date for the hearing on July 6, well after the Asian Games wrestling trials.
Court Sets Next Date for July 6 The selection trials for the 2026 Asian Games are scheduled to be held on May 30 and 31, with the tournament set for September-October this year. Phogat, in a fresh petition before the Delhi High Court, has challenged the Asian Games Selection Policy issued by the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) on February 25, as well as a circular of May 6 that excludes her from participating in the trials.
Additionally, Phogat has challenged a showcause notice issued by the WFI on May 9, accusing her of various violations and breaches of rules. The court has issued notice to WFI, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, and the Indian Olympic Association, directing them to file their responses to the contentions raised by Phogat.
Challenges in Selection Process The selection criteria set by WFI have been deemed arbitrary and discriminatory by Phogat. She highlighted that the policies overlapped with her notified sabbatical, training period, and pregnancy-related break, making it impossible for her to qualify for the trials.
Despite the challenges, Phogat remains determined to fight for her right to participate in the Asian Games trials. The court will examine the policies set by WFI before making any decisions regarding her participation.
Legal Battle Continues Vinesh Phogat, a celebrated wrestler, continues her legal battle to secure her spot in the Asian Games trials. The court's decision on July 6 will be crucial in determining her future in the upcoming tournament.
