The Chief Minister of Delhi, Rekha Gupta, made a significant move on Friday by flagging off 300 brand-new electric buses. This initiative marks a major step towards a greener, cleaner, and more modern transportation system in the capital city. The launch event also saw the inauguration of an interstate bus service coecting North East Delhi's Nanaksar area to Ghaziabad.
Delhi now boasts the highest number of electric buses in the country, with a fleet of 6,100 e-buses. Chief Minister Gupta aounced plans to scale up the fleet to around 14,000 by the year 2028-29, showcasing a strong commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly transportation solutions.
The newly introduced e-buses are equipped with state-of-the-art features, including low-floor designs, air conditioning, CCTV cameras, panic buttons, real-time tracking systems, and facilities for persons with disabilities. These buses aim to provide a safe, comfortable, and inclusive travel experience for all passengers.
The inter-state bus service will cover a distance of approximately 21 km, coecting key locations such as Bhajanpura, Loni Road, UP border, Pasonda, Hindon Airport, and Mohan Nagar. Initially, three e-buses will operate on a pilot basis, offering 12 trips daily in both directions. The service will run from 7:15 am to 10:10 pm, with a maximum fare capped at Rs 53.
During the launch event, Chief Minister Gupta highlighted the significant improvements in Delhi's transportation sector over the past year. She mentioned the efforts made by the government to enhance the financial stability of the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and address operational irregularities. The government's initiatives include modernizing bus depots, redeveloping ISBTs, establishing automated testing stations, and strengthening the Pollution Under Control Certificate (PUCC) system.
Transport Minister Dr. Pankaj Kumar Singh emphasized the city's rapid progress towards achieving its target of 5,000 electric buses by March. The government also laid the foundation stone for the upcoming DTC headquarters, which is set to be a modern and energy-efficient administrative hub.
Chief Minister Gupta stressed the importance of ensuring timely and hassle-free benefits for citizens under the electric vehicle subsidy schemes. The government is committed to clearing financial liabilities passed on by previous administrations in a responsible maer.
