The All India Congress Committee (AICC) received a formal request on Tuesday from actor-politician Vijay, whose party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged victorious in the Tamil Nadu elections, seeking support to form a government in the state. AICC General Secretary (Organisation) K C Venugopal confirmed the request and stated that the Congress is committed to upholding the mandate for a secular government dedicated to protecting the Constitution.
Venugopal emphasized that the mandate in Tamil Nadu clearly favored a secular government that upholds the principles of the Constitution in both letter and spirit. He reiterated that the Indian National Congress (INC) is resolute in ensuring that the BJP and its affiliates do not influence the governance of Tamil Nadu.
Following the unexpected success of TVK in wiing 108 seats in its electoral debut, attention has swiftly shifted towards coalition-building efforts. With TVK falling short of the majority mark, discussions are underway for a potential alliance with the Congress to form a stable government in Tamil Nadu.
Vijay, the President of TVK, highlighted his admiration for Perunthalaivar Kamaraj and expressed his intent to draw inspiration from the political stalwart in his mission. The Congress leadership has directed the Tamil Nadu Congress unit to carefully consider Vijay's request and align it with the sentiments expressed by the electorate.
Sources revealed that a proposed arrangement could see the Congress being allocated two Cabinet positions in the TVK-led government, with smaller allies receiving one each. Discussions have already commenced between the two parties, with the possibility of formalizing a coalition agreement in the near future.
While TVK is expected to hold the majority of ministerial positions to ensure stability and governance experience, the inclusion of the Congress in the government structure reflects the collaborative approach being adopted in Tamil Nadu post-elections.
With the political landscape in Tamil Nadu undergoing significant changes post-election, the formation of a coalition government between TVK and Congress could herald a new era of governance in the state.
