Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Meets Union Home Minister Amit Shah to Discuss Key Concerns

In a significant development, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah held a crucial meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Monday. Addressing the media before the meeting, Abdullah highlighted several pressing issues concerning J&K that he intended to discuss with the Home Minister.

One of the key topics on the agenda was the restoration of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir, which was declared a Union Territory in 2019. Omar Abdullah expressed his stance on the matter, stating, "If it was possible in one meeting, we would have achieved that by now."

Among the issues Abdullah raised were the delay in the approval of business rules, the need for rationalization of reservation policies, and the appointment of an advocate general for the region. The approval of the Transaction of Business Rules, which delineate the roles and powers of key officials in J&K, has been pending since Abdullah assumed office. These rules are crucial for the effective functioning of the government in the UT, given its unique dual structure of power.

Additionally, the rationalization of reservation policies has been a longstanding demand in J&K, with a focus on ensuring equitable opportunities for all sections of society. Abdullah mentioned that the issue of reservation has been forwarded to Delhi by the Lieutenant Governor and would be discussed during the meeting with the Home Minister.

Moreover, the appointment of an advocate general has been a vacant position in J&K since October 2024. The delay in filling this role has been attributed to uncertainties regarding the appointment process under the UT's administration.

Regarding the recent order granting control of telecom services to the LG's office, Abdullah emphasized that such decisions align with the J&K Reorganization Act. He underscored the importance of maintaining clarity on the distribution of powers, particularly in matters concerning law and order.
