Indian chess star R Praggnanandhaa has officially secured a spot in the prestigious 2026 Candidates tournament after a phenomenal performance on the FIDE Circuit in 2025. The 19-year-old prodigy emerged as the top player on the FIDE Circuit, wiing multiple tournaments and clinching his place in the upcoming event.
Praggnanandhaa's journey to the 2026 Candidates was marked by impressive victories, including wiing the Tata Steel Masters, Superbet Chess Classic Romania, UzChess Cup Masters, and London Chess Classic Open. Despite facing challenges at the FIDE World Cup 2025, Praggnanandhaa bounced back and secured his spot in the Candidates with his stellar performance throughout the year.
The 2026 Candidates tournament is scheduled to take place in Cyprus between March 28 and April 16, 2026. Praggnanandhaa will join other top players, such as Fabiano Caruana, Anish Giri, and Wei Yi, in competing for a chance to challenge for the world championship title currently held by DGukesh.
The eight qualified players will participate in a double round-robin tournament, playing 14 rounds to determine the ultimate wier. In case of a tie for first place, a playoff will be held to determine the champion who will advance to the World Championship Match in November 2026.
The 2026 Candidates tournament boasts a minimum prize fund of one million euros, with the wier set to take home 70,000 euros. The second and third place finishers will earn 45,000 euros and 25,000 euros, respectively. Additionally, players will receive 5,000 euros for every half point scored throughout the tournament.
