After enduring more than 8 months in preventive detention, Mehraj Malik, the only AAP MLA in Jammu and Kashmir, was granted release by the High Court on Monday.
The streets around Kathua jail buzzed with excitement on Tuesday morning as Mehraj Malik, the MLA from Doda, emerged from confinement following the High Court's decision to revoke his September 8, 2025, detention under the Public Safety Act (PSA).
Malik, resolute in his beliefs, reiterated that his core ideology remained steadfast even after his prolonged period of incarceration. Reflecting on his time behind bars, he asserted that had he not been an ordinary citizen, he would not have found himself in such a predicament.
As Malik stepped out of the jail premises, he was greeted by a jubilant crowd of supporters, drumbeats filling the air as enthusiastic slogans echoed through the streets.
The High Court, in its ruling, emphasized the distinction between "law and order" and "public order," underscoring that not every breach of law warranted preventive detention under the guise of maintaining public order.
Malik's detention, initiated by the District Magistrate of Doda, was challenged in court by his father who deemed it arbitrary and politically motivated. The court's decision to overturn the detention order marked a significant legal triumph for the MLA.
Malik, in his post-release address to the media, highlighted the pressing issue of unemployment in Jammu and Kashmir, urging the public to unite for a brighter future for the youth. He criticized the lack of concrete policies to address critical societal challenges and called for a collaborative effort towards meaningful reforms.
Despite facing challenges and unwarranted detention, Mehraj Malik remains steadfast in his commitment to serving the people and advocating for positive change in the region.
