The panel led by Revenue Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party’s Panaji MLA Atanasio ‘Babush’ Monserrate emerged victorious in a landslide win in the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) elections held on Friday. Securing an impressive 27 out of 30 wards in the civic body, the Monserrate-led panel outshined its rival, the 'Ami Panjekar' panel, led by Utpal Parrikar.
The Monserrate panel, headed by Babush Monserrate, whose son Rohit held the position of incumbent CCP Mayor, faced stiff competition from the 'Ami Panjekar' panel, supported by opposition parties including Congress and AAP. Despite the challenge, the Monserrate-led panel emerged victorious, showcasing a strong mandate from the people of Panaji.
Although elections in the CCP are non-partisan, the contest between the two panels was essentially a clash of political ideologies, with Monserrate expressing gratitude to the BJP for their support. In a statement, he acknowledged the trust placed in him by the party leadership and emphasized the importance of the people's voice in shaping the narrative for future elections.
Following the resounding victory, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant congratulated the wiing candidates, lauding the people of Panaji for rejecting negativity and endorsing the BJP-led panel. Sawant expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support and reiterated the party's commitment to continued development and progress in Panaji.
Rohit Monserrate's re-election with a significant margin further solidified the panel's dominance in the CCP elections, signaling a strong backing from the city's residents. Despite some setbacks, Monserrate remained optimistic about the panel's performance and vowed to continue serving the people diligently.
As the dust settles on the CCP elections, both wiing and losing panels are gearing up for the upcoming challenges. Utpal Parrikar, reflecting on the results, acknowledged the people's verdict and pledged to engage with citizens, address pertinent issues, and work towards a brighter future for Panaji.
With the assembly polls looming on the horizon, the political landscape in Panaji is set for further excitement and competition. The results of the CCP elections serve as a teaser for what's to come, with parties already strategizing for the electoral battle ahead.
